Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum emitted by computer screens, TVs, phones, and as part of general sunlight.

In today’s world, most of us spend hours in front of a screen of some kind, be it a phone, tablet or laptop computer. Their screens emit blue light and harmful rays that affect your skin during screen time. This blue light can cause everything from premature aging to chronic hyperpigmentation.

Now with the changing times the use of gadgets has become a must. Most of them are employees who spend eight-ten hours or more in front of a screen. Many skin care products are designed to block harmful blue light rays and reduce their effects. But are all these products right? Do they really help you? Let us know.

What is blue light and how does it harm the skin?

Blue light is a color in the visible light spectrum emitted by computer screens, TVs, phones, and as part of general sunlight. Blue light was previously thought to be responsible for disrupting vision and sleep cycles. But now it is also responsible for skin changes, including DNA damage and cell and tissue death.

The effects of blue light accelerate the aging process and cause fine lines, wrinkles and skin discoloration, explains dermatologist Kalpana Soulanki of Clinique Dermatech.

The rays from the screen increase oxidative stress

A recent study has shown that in modern life, not all of us get enough natural light during the day and, conversely, we are exposed to high levels of artificial light. The study says that our skin bears the brunt of that exposure in the form of high levels of “oxidative stress,” and we all know the link between oxidative stress and aging.

Exposure of human skin cells to light from electronic devices and each other leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species that lead to apoptosis and necrosis. Blue light penetrates the skin more deeply than UV light and stimulates the activity of color-producing cells. This causes hyperpigmentation in your skin among other things. It can also cause melasma.

Kalpana explains to Solanki that blue light is not bad as blue light is used for photodynamic therapy in the treatment of acne and skin cancer. Worrying is more continuous, repeated exposure to blue light.

What is Blue Light Skin Care?

Blue light skin care is available in many forms – from sprays, creams and gels to sunscreens, which can be used to block blue light and rejuvenate your skin. There are even night creams that claim to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles caused by blue light.

Blue light sunscreen works to block blue light as well as UV rays. Regular sunscreen does not cover blue light as well as sunscreens that block blue light. Tinted sunscreens with SPF 30 and higher can protect the skin from blue light as well as UVA and UVB.
