Skip the preservatives and make your own homemade peanut butter in minutes with this easy recipe! So easy and delicious, you wouldn’t want it any other way.
Here are some recipes you must make with homemade peanut butter: 3-Ingredient Peanut Butter Cookies, Peanut Butter Fudge, and Peanut Butter Bars!
Why homemade peanut butter is the best
Not only is homemade peanut butter ridiculously easy to make, but it blows away anything you find on the shelf. Say goodbye to those expensive natural peanut butters! You are in control of the ingredients, so you can remove all the added sugar and weird additives. (There’s no xylitol, so this peanut butter is safe for your furry friends to eat! You should try it in these homemade dog treats.)
Plus, fresh-mixed peanuts taste amazing! So creamy and flavorful, you’ll wonder why you ever settled for anything less. This homemade peanut butter will take your next PB&J from good to great.
Only 2 ingredients to make it
The ingredients are so simple that making homemade peanut butter is a no-brainer. Here’s what you need! The recipe card at the end of the post has exact measurements.
- Dry roasted peanuts: You can use salted or unsalted, if you use salted peanuts I recommend leaving out the extra salt.
- Salt to taste: Not only does homemade peanut butter taste delicious, it also enhances the overall flavor.
Making other kinds of nut butters
The best thing about this recipe is that you can swap out the roasted peanuts for other nuts! Try almonds, hazelnuts, cashews, you name it! Almond butter is very expensive when you get it from the store. Enjoy it at home for a quarter of the price!
How to Make Homemade Peanut Butter
Fresh, delicious homemade peanut butter in less than 5 minutes! You can use it for many different recipes. (Find some of my favorites below!)
- Mixture: Add the peanuts to a food processor. Blend for 1 minute before scraping down the sides and bottom. Blend again for a few more minutes, until smooth.
- Repeat: Stop the processor and scrape the sides and bottom as needed to make sure all the peanuts are thoroughly combined.
- Season and Store: If desired, add a few pinches of salt. Transfer to an airtight container.
Tips and Variations
Here are some additional ways to make sure your homemade peanut butter turns out just the way you like it.
- Adjust the consistency: You don’t need to mix the peanuts until they are completely smooth! For peanut butter blend until it reaches your preferred peanut butter consistency.
- MMake it smooth: If you prefer a very smooth peanut butter, blend until the peanuts are very smooth, then chop up 1/3 cup of the extra peanuts and mix them in by hand.
- Adjust the salt: Adjust the salt according to your taste. If you use salted peanuts, you need very little salt, if any. If you use unsalted peanuts, you will need 2-3 good sized pinches of salt if you like.
- Use enough peanuts: If the peanuts are difficult to blend, your food processor may be larger than mine. You should have enough peanuts for the blade, they will become more and more pure. If necessary, add more peanuts until the mixture is consistently combined. Your final yield of peanut butter will be higher, but you’ll have more success blending the peanut butter more smoothly.
How long does homemade peanut butter last?
Store in an airtight container or jar at room temperature for up to 1 month or in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.
Peanut butter will harden slightly if stored in the refrigerator. You can let it come to room temperature before using or heat it in the microwave for 5-second intervals before using.
*Note: Natural peanut butter can separate as it sits. If the oil has separated from your peanut butter when you go to use it, use a spoon or butter knife to mix it all together before using it.
