Got away from me last week. Every time I try to get something done in the studio, something else needs my attention. But on Saturday and yesterday, I was able to concentrate for a while to check a few items off my studio to-do list. I finally got the final details done on the studio office area cabinets. Frankly, I still need to finish some electrical stuff. The scones aren’t actually wired yet. But as far as the actual cabinets go, they’re done.

As a reminder, this is how cabinets started. These are IKEA sectional cabinets and I bought wedding cabinet doors and drawer fronts.

As of last week, I’ve gotten quite a bit done. I added trim to the doors and drawer fronts, built a bridge between the two upper side cabinets, trimmed the cabinets, installed sconces, built the countertop, and cut out the window.

But I still need to add cabinet trim to the window area, decide what to do with the wall around the window (keep it pink or paint it the same color as the wall?), decide what to do with the back of the cubbies (keep them pink or paint them a different color?), the window trim Paint and install all cabinet knobs and pulls.

I finished it all last night and here is my final decision. I went ahead and painted the area around the window the same wall color (Benjamin Moore Classic Grey), which I think looks great, especially now that a little trim is installed where the cabinets meet the wall around the window. It has a very clean, finished look and the fact that the small amount of wall is actually the color of the wall instead of pink does a lot to open up the area visually. Then, since it was the only solution that made sense in my mind, I applied gold leaf to the backs of the cubbies so that the pink and gold bridge would make sense and flow better with the pink and gold doors and drawer fronts. It made sense in my mind and now that I have things in cubbies, the gold is nothing more than a subtle background.

I know these seem like very small decisions, but these small details can really make a huge difference in the final product. So I’m glad I spent some time wrestling with them and came up with a solution I really like. I am very proud of how these cabinets turned out.

I may still decide to add a little ornament to the countertop to bring some interest and color, but for now, I’m enjoying the cabinets being done.

I wish I had remembered to put the flush ceiling light back in the ceiling when I still had the scaffolding there, but I didn’t realize it was still hanging down until I was taking pictures this morning. So I’m still undecided as to whether or not the cubbies actually need tape lights.

With that ceiling light hanging down and pointing at the cubbies, it kind of washes those things out of there and fills the cubbies with light. But once that light is back in place, I may decide that the cubbies really need some tape lights. I’ll make that decision after I get the outlets done and the ceiling lights re-installed.

I’m so excited to have this huge project done! And I love how it turned out. This morning, I went into the studio several times, so I stood by the cabinets for a while.

And now I’m on the rest of the to-do list. I’m slowly but surely ticking off that list and getting stuff done! I think I’ll focus on installing all the trim next. Of course, what I really like to do is decorative items. That’s a fun thing. But the trim should really be done first. Or should I? 😀 Let’s see.

Anyway, here’s what my to-do list looks like from this morning. I had to add a few items to the list I had left and moved all the “done” items to the bottom. But I’m getting them done!
