I have an almost free day today, finally getting around to getting some more work done on the studio cabinets (first time since Monday), so hopefully I’ll have some progress to share with you tomorrow. But in the meantime, I’ve also been a bit obsessed (again) with our floor plan, and last night, I turned my attention to the laundry room.
Currently, our “laundry room” is a corner of the sunroom. For those who don’t know, our so-called “sunroom” is the worst room in the house, and it gets torn down to make room for the extra room. It’s just a sad (but huge) room that I hide behind our music room and these beautiful doors…
I don’t want to open those doors or go into that room. It is not well built, so the windows are cheap and drafty. There are no HVAC vents in the room, so the room is very hot in the summer and cold in the winter. Additionally, there are no lights in the room. So I don’t want to go there, but that’s the space I have right now for the washer and dryer.
When people see the rest of our house, it’s the last thing they expect when they open those doors in the back of the music room…
So needless to say, I’m really looking forward to the day this room gets torn down. And I dream of having a beautiful, organized laundry room with original lighting, a window to let the outside air in, and an HVAC vent to regulate the temperature at all times of the year.
After further reviewing our floor plan over the last few days and tweaking the plan based on your many suggestions, I shared the options with my mom, brother and sister over lunch yesterday. I think this is the favorite of the bunch for the master bedroom closet(s) and Matt’s equipment…
But my mom reminded me that I should make the laundry room as big as possible because right now, I’m struggling to store my carpet cleaner, vacuum cleaner, etc. All of my cleaning supplies are currently stored in a cabinet in the walk-in pantry, which (to me) seems like an odd place for cleaning supplies. I like to keep them in the laundry/utility room. I also need space for my cat’s litter box and extra cat litter, as well as other pet supplies.
So with all that in mind, I readjusted the plan to hit the laundry room…
Heck, in the end, I probably ended up adding that entire 7.5 feet. But for now, I’m just focusing on the laundry room and dreaming about what’s to come. So with the laundry room bumped out, I was left with another long and narrow space. I’m guessing it’s 7’4″ x about 15′.
So I’ve been looking for ways to organize a long, narrow laundry room, and I’ll tell you. I got some amazing inspiration and now I have such a vision for this room! My initial idea was to put the sink under the window (which actually came from some of your suggestions), but what I’m most drawn to are long, narrow laundry rooms where literally everything is lined up on one wall.
This is one of my favorite things I’ve seen so far on Houzz. I keep going back and looking at this room, dreaming and planning what my own set up like this might look like, but it has everything I need.

Of course, mine has more color and pattern. And you bet I’m going to let the place turn into a little jewel box. As for the color and pattern, I can imagine something else along these lines…

Although I’m not really a “wallpaper on the ceiling” person. But you better believe there’s some fun, colorful wallpaper on the walls!
One of the things I love about this arrangement is that I don’t have to deal with cabinets that roll into a corner. I always find it very frustrating to figure out what to do with those blind corners. This configuration eliminates that frustration. Plus, I can have a bigger window this way. The window above the sink must be small. Without that wall, I would have a much bigger window, which means more sunlight!

So I’m now ridiculously excited about my future laundry room. I have a vision for it and I know the measurements, so I can start planning how to arrange the cabinets and storage. And since I have color as a jumping off point (my new washer and dryer are dark blue), I can start getting some ideas for wallpaper!

I love this everything-on-one-wall arrangement with the window at the end. I think it would be perfect for my future laundry room!
I keep dreaming and planning about this space as well as our new bedroom, family room and back patio. But for today, I have a few studio cabinets to work with. I hope to have some progress to share with you all tomorrow!
