Last night, I was so frustrated with how time consuming this cabinet project was that I couldn’t finally get some color on the cabinets. I covered the cabinets and only got about halfway through the first coat, but I still wanted to see a little pink.

You’ll still have to use your imagination to picture the finished cabinets, but this sneak peek of pink should help.

I am so excited to finish them!! The first coat always takes longer, but after the second coat, I still need two coats of clear coat finish. I really hope they are done by Friday!! I want to get through the weekend with this huge project so I can focus on other projects on my to-do list.

Since the weather was nice yesterday, I took a few minutes to tape and paint the sconces that go in this area. I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in a gloss finish. Unfortunately, even after shaking the can for 60 seconds, the first few sprays came out dry and harsh. I don’t know why it happened, but it almost looks like one of those textured spray paints.

I wouldn’t do it now if it’s visible enough in the picture for you to see it, but the texture is rough and it contrasts very well with the glossy finish.

So I had to wait until it was completely dry, sand it down with 220-grit sandpaper, and try again. After the first 30 seconds of spray was rough and dry, the rest worked fine.

Now all the pieces have a beautiful glossy white finish on them and as soon as they dry (I give them a couple of days before handling them), I can gold leaf the gold colored parts, then install them as soon as the countertop and window casing are done.

One thing I haven’t decided yet with these lights is where to start and stop the gold leaf. That decision is easy with pendant lights.

But with these scones, it’s not so obvious. These sconces do not have a raised section around the bottom of the shade for a proper stopping point for the gold leaf. And what do I do with that horizontal support piece? Is it white? Or should I put that part in gold leaf? These are some of the smaller decisions I obsess over.

Moving on, I’m ready to get to work on my desk makeover as soon as the cabinets are done. I bought two of these ready-made, easy-to-install drawers. I honestly had no idea these existed until someone mentioned them in a comment on a previous post and I went to Amazon to check it out. There are so many different variations of these ready-to-install drawers! I can’t believe I never knew these existed!

I mean, it couldn’t be easier. You screw the drawer to the bottom of the desktop and you have a drawer!

I bought two of them for my desk and I think they will be perfect. The ones I got weren’t too big, but I needed room for pens, pencils, a stapler, some post-it notes, etc. So they don’t have to be big. These are perfect.

Finally, I now have a very clear plan for the pendant light I want to go above the desk. This was actually my mom’s idea, I love it! Basically, I’m going to take the idea of my favorite piece of art ever made…

And I’m going to turn that idea into a pendant light using these 20 lampshade rings.

That’s just my kind of project! Tedious, repetitive and probably made of 1500 small pieces. 😀 I don’t know why, but I love projects like that and I’m so anxious to get started! But first, I only need to spend a couple of days finishing these cabinets.
