I’ve spent a few days working on my pendant light to go over my desk in the studio, but I’ve been thinking a bit about how I want to make it on the desk. For a while now, I’ve been planning to paint the desk. But I also bought some drawers that attach under the desktop for easy access to pens, pencils, post-it notes, etc. So I also had to think about how I was going to hide those drawers.

Here’s what the desk looks like right now, so you can see that if I attach the drawers to the bottom of the desktop, the sides and back of the drawers will be exposed.

I want the desk to be lighter, brighter and look more feminine. I’m still not sure about the colors. I can be white or I can be white and gold. I haven’t decided on that yet. But what I do know is that I still want to end up with something Like this desk from Wayfair., relatively open back, but pretty panels on the sides.

So I plan to remove the “V” design from the back of the desk and move the bottom horizontal support up, then add the side support at the same height. I add plywood panels inside that area to hide the drawers, so you can’t really see that upper area.

I leave the back open, but I wAdd some decorative panels to the sides of the ant.

And that’s as far as getting my plan in my mind. I’ve been online several times over the last week looking for the perfect wood planks to go with and I’m having a hard time making a decision. Here are some possibilities.

I have to keep in mind that any panels I buy will need to be cut down to size so I’m not left with an entire design. But if I can find one big enough to fit both sides from one panel, that might make the project cheaper. Kirkland’s has for example This is a large panel I cut it in half and was big enough to use each half on each side of the desk. I turn each half vertically so the flowers go up instead of growing sideways.

So that’s my vision and my plan. I’m having a hard time finding the right panel(s) to use. The part I really don’t know wI should have used panels with a more geometric or more floral design. I love the idea of bringing a floral element to this area of the room, but I also don’t want floral overload. And I always love a geometric pattern used with a floral pattern, so that idea appeals to me as well.

Anyway, that’s the plan, and I’m on the perfect hunt wood panel(s) that I can use on the sides of my desk. I’m really excited to start that makeover. Lightening up the color and design of that desk will go a long way toward making the area look finished. And really, after I finish the light, the desk and chair are the last big projects for the room! I can see the finish line!
